Many screen reader users move around a page by its headings, the way a sighted reader skims. Heading Structure Analyzer shows you a page's headings as that outline, and flags the problems that make it hard to follow.
Two ways in
- Paste HTML. Paste the code of a page or a section. The analysis updates as you type, so it is handy while writing a template.
- Analyze Live URL. Enter an address and choose Analyze URL. We load the page in a browser and read its headings as rendered, including any added by JavaScript. Hidden headings are marked as hidden.
What it checks
- No headings at all.
- A missing H1. Every page should have a main heading.
- More than one H1. Flagged for review rather than as an error, since it is sometimes intended.
- Empty headings, which are announced as headings with nothing in them.
- Skipped levels, such as an H2 followed directly by an H4. Moving back up levels, from an H4 to an H2, is fine and is not flagged.
Reading the results
Structure Summary counts your headings at each level and gives an overall verdict. Heading Outline shows every heading indented by level, with problem headings highlighted. Issues & How to Fix explains each problem and what to do.
If a page will not load
Some sites block automated visitors, and pages that take too long to load time out. Open the page in your browser, view its source, and use Paste HTML instead.
