Impact by disability group

A list of technical failures does not tell you who is being shut out. This section does. It takes your findings and groups them by the people each one affects.

The six groups

GroupTypical barriers
BlindImages with no alternative text, unlabelled buttons and fields, content a screen reader cannot reach or make sense of.
Low VisionLow contrast text, content that breaks when zoomed or resized.
DeafblindAnything that fails for screen reader and braille display users, including missing labels and structure.
MobilityControls that cannot be reached or operated with a keyboard or switch device, targets that are hard to hit.
CognitiveUnclear labels and instructions, confusing structure, missing page titles.
Attention DeficitMoving, flashing or auto playing content, and layouts that make it hard to stay oriented.

Reading a tile

Each tile shows the number of unique issues that affect that group, and underneath, how many elements they affect in total. Groups are ordered with the most affected first. A group with no findings is not shown.

Why the totals do not add up

One issue often affects several groups. A form field with no label affects blind, deafblind and cognitive users, so it counts in all three tiles. Adding the tiles together will therefore give a bigger number than your total number of issues. That is expected.

How to use it

  • Making the case. "Blind visitors cannot complete our contact form" moves a budget conversation in a way "four instances of label" does not.
  • Checking your priorities. If one group is hit far harder than the others, the fixes for that group are likely to do the most good.
  • Talking to your users. If you know your audience includes a particular group, start there.

A caution

This view is built from automated findings, so it has the same blind spots. Barriers that need a person to find, such as a keyboard trap halfway through a checkout, will not show up here unless an expert review finds them.
